Sushi or Fish Fingers? [2ex] How preferences for diversity affect the sustainability of fisheries
نویسنده
چکیده
Abstract. We consider consumers’ preferences for food fish diversity in a multispecies fishery model. Studying both the long-run equilibria and the transitional dynamics of an open-access fishery we conclude that the outcome is generally less sustainable the stronger preferences for diversity are. We show that even without biological interactions the optimal landing fees for the different stocks of fish are dynamically interdependent and have to be adjusted in a non-monotonic way. One policy implication is that substantial landing fees should be levied also on a fish species with a relatively high stock if it is a substitute for an endangered species.

Diversity and complexity of angler behaviour drive socially optimal input and output regulations in a bioeconomic recreational-fisheries model
In many areas of the world, recreational fisheries are not managed sustainably. This might be related to the omission or oversimplification of angler behaviour and angler heterogeneity in fisheries-management models. We present an integrated bioeconomic modelling approach to examine how differing assumptions about angler behaviour, angler preferences, and composition of the angler population al...
متن کاملThe end of the line: who is most at risk from the crisis in global fisheries?
The crisis of global overfishing has been widely covered in both the scientific literature and the popular media over the last decade. However, with his recent film The End of the Line (Murray 2009), Rupert Murray tells the story with unprecedented power. Heralded as the ‘‘Inconvenient Truth’’ for fisheries—a reference to David Guggenheim’s influential film on the perils of climate change—The E...

Fish sampling was conducted to evaluate the species diversity of fish in 4 stations in Sanandaj Azad dam ecosystem seasonally from summer of 2017 to spring of 2018. A total of 1057 fish were caught in 12 species, of which more than 80% were caught in the lake behind the dam. The Cyprinidae family had 11 species with the most species diversity and only Sasanidus kermanshahensis belonged to the N...
متن کاملTaking animal breeding into the wild: regulation of fishing gear can make fish stocks evolve higher productivity
Harvesting of living resources involves conflicting objectives between profits, human consumption, population sustainability and ecological impacts. These trade-offs are often complex, as harvesting affects demography and productivity of wild populations immersed in rich ecological interactions, and consequences may extend to the evolutionary dimension. In a life-history model of a commercially...

Agunmukha River is an important water body having plentiful aquatic resources. The fisheries communities in the river are familiar with a diverse range of fishing gear and crafts to catch fish. Therefore, the objectives of the present study were to explore fishing gear and fishing crafts, catch composition of the respective gearand identification of fish biodiversity of Agunmukha River. A step ...
